Book Binding

On the 16th of October we made are very own books which I thought was very interesting as I had never done it before, the week before we had given a brief of designing a 32 page section of a book which contains visual, typographic and illustrative designs relating to the numbers 0-9.
We used the idea of Pi but not using maths we did it as the food making each number into a different flavour of pie for example: Mud Pie, Apple Pie, Cottage Pie etc.
We hand drew 3 images each and then traced them onto the tracing paper which we took down to Rossington Street the next day to have the images screen printed onto paper we chose the colours red and black as they were bold and stood out.

The process of the book binding was alot to take in so I wrote down the process so I could remember it in the future.

1. Fold each section of the book down with the bonefolder.
2. Mark an inch inwards along the seam, with the tapes place them evenly between the first two marks and mark this off. Using a ruler draw a line marking all the pages off.
3. With a craft knife cut the ruler marks.
4. Put masking tape along the edge of the table or the area you are working. Tape the two pieces of tape to the table.
5. Measure up the first section of the book to the two pieces of tape.
6. Thread the needle and double it up, sew each section of the book together making kettle knots after each third section in the book. Sew around the tags to make it straight and tight. (When pulling it tight make sure you pull the needle and thread upwards.)
7. Place in a vice or under some weights or something heavy which is going to flatten it down, fill in the edges of the book with PVA glue.
8. Add two more coats of PVA, and then stick down some binding fabric onto the edges of the book and cover this with a thin layer of PVA making sure it is all covered. Then cut the ends off the tapes.
9. Cut out two rectangles of paper or the front and the back and then trim the edges of the book which your tutor will help you with.
10. Cut out two rectangles of cardboard which is about 3mm bigger then your book. Also meausre the spine of the book the same.
11. Use some fabric cover and draw round the cardboard rectangles and spine, then glue the cardboard and spine onto the fabric and folding the corners over when you have folded each of the corners in cut the corners in and down with the bonefolder. (Cut the corners of the fabric at a 45 degree angle.) Mark the lines of the book once the fabric has been stuck down.
12. Stick the coloured paper to the cover starting with the front and then moving the book so that you can stick down the back cover. You can then with the bonefolder mark the lines of the book.
