Portfolio Evaluation

Reflect on your relationship between your portfolio of work and your creative ambitions as a designer.

My Portfolio shows a range of skills both using Type and Image. My main interest lies in Type and Layout, to show more about me and who I am as a designer I need to show more of this in my work over the summer I will be building my portfolio with more Type and Layout work to show my greater interest, but at times I do like to work with both image and type which I still would like to carry on with.

Relate your own work to specific areas of contemporary design.

I think that I have my own unique style, for inspiration I tend to look at other design blogs, flickr, Paper Cut Panic. A designer in particular whose work I follow is Domenic Lippa his typographic work has been an inspiration to me since a young age. Im always constantly looking around at billboards, posters, flyers for inspiration and get a rush of excitement when I see something that catches my eye, I like to collect typography to, and document it to look back to when I need it in my work.

Evaluate your strengths and weaknesses against identified intentions and areas of contemporary practice.

My strengths lie In Typography and Presentation for example presenting my work on boards and in photography. I have noticed that Im fairly confident when applying this skill in my work and not afraid to work with other ideas. Ive also noticed that I have become more interested in creating logo design and would like to carry on with this in third year along with magazine design. I have an interview for Ink publishing in London where they create all the in flight magazines and travel brochures, fingers crossed I get the placement here as I think it will really show if my heart lies in layout I am also looking forward to seeing what it is like to work in a professional enviroment so this is why I am going to Elmwood in London to visit and talk with the art directors.

I want do develop my software skills further and work more on my layout skills in InDesign to help me improve my knowledge and skills for the field that I wish to go into so I feel more confident with it.

Briefly clarify the relationship between your creative practice and your proposed dissertation.

My dissertation is looking at how guerrilla advertising is more effective then mainstream advertising. I have a strong intrest in advertising and I am always looking around for inspiration mainly advertisiments to help me with my work. I want to furthur my knowledge in advertising so that it become more useful in my work that I produce next year.

Level 02

1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

The skills I have learnt in this module is to focus on working as a team and to focus on who my audience is and how to get my message across using our personality and knowledge to create our pieces of work to create an impact. I have learnt to organise and plan the work that needs to be done for the week. I’ve also documented my work with every improvements and changes I have made and also photographing my products into context. For this module research was a big part of it and getting other peoples opinions so this was a big foucs to organise and document this well to help with idea generation ideas.

I have also noticed that I can communicate a little better and take time with my work to make it a quality piece for example the A3 boards they have helped bring my designs together to create as a set.
I tried packaging design for the first time where I have learnt and found new skills for that which I enjoyed doing but is something that I wouldnt focus on doing again.

2. What approaches to generating work and solutions to problems have you developed and how have they helped?

I have experimented a lot with colour, layout and type it has helped to show my improvements and to see what design is effective for my audience it also helps show the weaknesses and strengths in my designs. Regular crits and talking to piers about my designs have helped by getting good feedback and more focus on what I need to improve or carry on with.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

The strengths in the briefs I think are my documentation, and research. These you see by my annotations and ongoing development design showing improvements along the process. I think the time management and planning shown in these briefs was something that needed to be improved on and communication with the partner. My designs created on a computer has improved a lot more and I have been using it a lot more with more confidence then I did before and it has helped with my work to create it more visual.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how could you exploit these more fully?

My weaknesses lie in time management as at the time it was a difficult stage as well it was difficult to communicate and plan with my partner to make sure we were doing the right work for that day or week, I think that maybe the documentation needs to be a bit more clearer at the end of it where I was trying to do a lot of things all at once.

5. Identify five things that you will do different next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

The first thing that I would do differently would be to collect more primary research to work from so I have a bit more inspiration to communicate with, create a time plan of what I need to do each night. Document more of my work on the blog so I can get feedback from other users it also helps when I put it on my blog to evaluate and annotate my work so I can get a clear understanding. I will also make sure I communicate more with my partner to make sure we are working at our best ability.

When browsing the internet I thought I would have a look at Ilovetypography as I hadnt looked at it for a while and wanted to see what was new on it.
I came across this font which was under best fonts of 2008 its a very voluptuous, fun, and sexy font. Looks as though it should be in a magazine or on a funny or rude birthday card.

This is one of the IPhone wallpaper backgrounds.

Using Helvetica, signs and braille I thought this looked really clever and that the designer wasent only thinking about people that could see. The colour really brings out the designs to making it nice and easy to read.

This is another from the IPhone wallpapers.

I so so so would like this on my background if I ever had an IPhone :-( I just think its really cute and the colours are bright and contrasting and remind me of sweets. The typeface is very suitable and looks quite playful.

This type looks really sharp and crisp then goes out to be delicate contradicting the swear word which you would have thought would be bold and there right in your face but instead its quite suttle but still quite sharp.

I love this type so much so very eye catching. I love the thickness of the lettering and the curvy ends, I really think the shading brings out the white lettering from being flat on the page.

These you can buy in Urban Outfitters they look great and think I might take a trek down to go buy one! There created out of metal also using recycled paper.

These look so tasty but you just wouldnt want to eat them they look that good! :D I would so buy these if they were on sale reminds me of when we made the cake out of type wish I thought of this!

Research on Hair Typography and Illustration

These letter forms are created with real hair shown above which I think is quite effective and creates a clear form to show a clear outline of the letter.

These patterns look like they have been illustrated on the computer to create a equal and artistic pattern, I think these are lovely pieces of artwork and doesnt really look like strands of hair.

From the website SHCH graphics group most of the art work is very similar to one another using different weights of lines. I like this piece of work, a letter created around with lines and shapes to form a letter form it reminds me of flowing hair in the wind spiralling.

This poster I found on Google images when typing in Hair Illustration it came up with this as I think the small illustrations are fairly appropriate to my Christmas research of the outline illustrations that I did, I really like the different colours and hair styles and I think that this style of drawing is a good way to show a style of hair.

Shown below is an image that I found from Flick r It was showing a style of hair using arabic lettering which at first was something I wanted to include in my animation to not reveal to much to the viewer until the end frame I think this is a clever way of showing the subject of Hair Styles not only is it showing an image but it is showing type as well.

For this I was just experimenting with imagery, I collected some hair from my Mums salon and didnt no quite what I wanted to do with it but I want to use it effectivly, I did want to make it into a typographic piece but this seemed more appropriate as it was more relative. I scanned in the hair and created the style in Photoshop and Illustrator and gave it some colour to lift the figure from the white background.

Hair Styles today

Women today often look at celebrity inspiration or other women such as friends or family. I found out that a large percentage of women take a photograph of a celebrities hair style and request the hair style in the hair salon. I do think this is a good idea but I think this sometimes puts pressure on the stylist to get it look exactly right when half the time it looks similar but not perfect.

I looked at this website on L'oreal Inspiration Gallery:

Where you can get inspiration from models this is where you can search for different styles using a menu selecting whether you want blonde, brown, red etc from what hair salon and what hair stylist. This is quick and easy way to choose what hairstyle you are looking for.

I also looked at this website called Virtual Hairstyle Gallery:

This website is quite funny but I think people actually use it seriously to see if they wanted to go for a different hair style or colour they can look at how it looks like on their face shape.

This where you can upload a photo of yourself to see how different hair styles and colours would look right for you which I think is a good to try out before you have it done even though I'm not sure it would like perfectly right but fairly similar I would expect.

The Best of Hair Styles....

For the Christmas Research brief, I kind of knew what I wanted to work on already but wasent sure if there was enough to go on. I have chosen to look at the best hair styles on Women looking from the 60s to today, because the style has changed rapidly and the styles in the 60s where very traditional and today which is quite abstract. I have chosen Women because they seem to do alot more with there style of there hair which gives me alot to work on.

I will be looking at the products you use to create a good hair style and the enviroment of where to get you hair done, I will start of with internet research then progress into primary research where I will be taken photographs. This will then lead onto hand drawings of hairstyles from the 60s and today so I will have a different range to look at. I will look at the simple outline of hair and working with this on the computer so I will have the different medias to look at and compare with each other.
I will also look at the different hair colours which also create a good style to the hair by using colour swatches.

Christmas Presents

WOOOOOOO ITS CHRISTMAS TIME!!! I was so excited to be home to see my family and friends but as usual I left my christmas shopping till the last minute so 2 days before Christmas Eve I was out shopping at the busiest time what was I thinking!!! But I did get it done all in one day thank god!!!

Looking around the shops and the presents the packaging and labels really interested me with there creative appealing designs. One of the presents that I recieved that I have wanted for a long time was the Creative Design Suite CS4 the packaging didnt just look nice but when it is opened the box has been well crafted and made to protect the product really well.

With the colours they have used to design the packaging they have created a colour palette on the front of the box, its a simple design but still visually appealing just using colour.

The other adobe box I liked was the InDesign box not only because its pink! but its eyecatching and nice to look at better then using a white box, I would keep this box more then other one as its more colourful and I prefer colour.

LUSH

Hadn't been in there for a long time but always no when im walking past it as you get this strong waft of fruity essence from experience when spending along time in there deciding what bath bomb to get your dad you start to get a slight headache from all the eroma lol!

I just love going in there as they have some strange bath bombs that either look nice or look like sick. Its always so colourful and bright in there and they always have this weird but creative names for their products who I would love to know who comes up with them lol! Its set out nicely as well so its easy to look at each product and to test what they smell like which I like the best!

I liked the wrapping and labels of the Christmas gifts this year, they were as bright at the gifts are inside. The labels have information written on them explaining whats inside the package using different typefaces for each present and little illustrations on the front and back.

HARRODS

For Christmas my Mum brought some Earl Grey as part as my Boyfriends Christmas present as he loves it, the packaging was lovely and looked liked it could be kept and used over again. Above are a few more that I liked on their website, the typography has been used throughout the designs, the colours are appealing and are not to bright. Some of the packaging is not to detailed which is good as the use of simple shapes have been used to layer on a creative design. What I like is the swirls of gold and the layout of the design this is what interested me about them and that they also look unique to designs in supermarkets today.

WHITTARD
Me and my Boyfriend wanted to get his parents a joint present for Christmas as we are both pretty skint, so we knew kind of what they wanted he said they needed a new teapot as they have had the other one for quite a few years, The teapots in there are quite traditonal and classic compared to the packaging of tea and coffee these are very modern, with the colours and design they have used. I really like the typography. What attracted me to the packaging in Whittard was the display of type and how it has been set out to create a an appealing and attractive design without the use of illustration.

This makes me laugh evey time dont ask why!!

Had to put this on here the, water slide advert for Barclays makes me laugh :D esp the bit at the end "Can you get me a towel!" hahaha I tend to do impressions of this in his accent from time to time. I think it is a very unique advert and is funny to watch not the sort of thing that would come into your thoughts straight away for a Barclays advert, also the song fits really well with the advert and the bloke is pretty funny (geeky) to look at, well good!

I have learnt a lot of understanding of research both primary and secondary and how to show that it is an inspiration to me in my work.

I have also noticed that I can communicate a little better and take time with my work to make it a quality piece for example the A2 boards they have helped bring my designs together to create as a set.
With the Colour for print I have learnt a lot of new skills that I hadn’t learnt before to do with colour and it has helped a lot with both briefs to understand the processes furthur.

Recipe Cards Development

I created a set of recipe cards for each type of sauce to inform the users of how to put the product to good use, giving them tips and instructions. I used the same colours like I said before as the Label design and used the same font for the headings, the rest of the text I used Bell Gothic Std as it was a clear font and easy to read it also was a font between serif and sans serif because of the tiny flicks it has at the end of each letter, which it what I wanted because I didn't want something that was to traditional or bold so this was a good choice to go with.

Here are my labels photographed adding the chillies I think is a good effect as it puts it into a situation. The photographs look good also with the labels put onto the bottle makes it look more realistic on how it would look.

These are the final front and backs of the labels, Ive used the font James Fajardo for the front and back Ive used this font because it is a typeface that looks as though it is created for a sauce from the way it flows and is a little splattered in places, I will be using this font for my posters and recipe cards to create a set I will also be using the colours that I created for my label for the use of the poster and recipe cards.
The print process I would use for this product would be Flexography because it a lower cost then any other printing process and enables faster drying and faster production it has an advantage over lithography because it can use a wider range of inks and is good at printing on a variety of materials.

To print my labels using the Flexography process I got information from printing.com where they sent me a book showing there prices and what they can print showing sizes, print stocks etc.

To print the front and reverse of the label it would cost

For 10,000 - £555
For 20,000 - £995

These would be self adhesevive, semi gloss finish, full colour and cut to size.

Ongoing development of Chilli Labels

From my second crit and taking my labels to show, my next focus was to look at the chilli stalk by maybe considering manipulating it by changing the stalk to a exclamation mark to show that it is hot as it looks and to create it as a statement. I also played around with the colours to see if this was effective.

I do like the exclamation mark as the stalk because it is different but I don't think it looks realistic as it did before. Taking the background colour away makes the label stand out allot more as it doesn't feel as its been merged in with a colour background making it look hidden, getting opinions from my piers made me realise that the white labels looked much better and stood out from the paper.

Chilli Labels Development

Looking at the photographs I had taken I tried to base my designs on impact so focusing mainly on colour and layout for these I created some typographic eye catching labels.
Compared to my other labels that I designed before these have improved alot on colour, and impact and look what they are trying to say HOT!
I generally prefer the long portrait labels because they look more appealing and quite simple but still visually appealing. I would now need to experiment with different background colours and different typography headings to move on to the next stage of putting it into context and photographing it.

Primary Research of Labels

With going to the Crit with my first label designs I was told to focus on creating more impact and personality which I totally agree with because the labels I created first would never stand out on a supermarket shelf and compete with other brands.
So I went and had a look around Sainsburys and photographed a few condiment labels that caught my eye where I focused on type, colour and layout.

So from the last post I had an idea but was still unsure on what to do for it but now I'm all set and ready to go. I'm still want to promote, persuade and inform that chilli sauce is good to my audience of younger and older adults and other people that are already interested and like chilli, I will be creating 4 labels for Extra Hot, Hot, Original, and Mild Sauce. This will then lead on to create recipe cards for each type of sauce so the users can put the sauce to good use. I will then be creating 4 posters for each of the type of sauce which will be distributed around and in the area of a supermarket to promote the product.

Here is the first process of my logo design to put onto my labels, I experimented with different brush strokes, layouts and colours to see which one looked the best to carry on with for further design.

I then went on to creating the label by adding background colour and type to create stylistic piece to become eye grabbing if it was in a context on a supermarket shelf.

But from my first Crit I needed to improve on creating more personality and impact so that they would stand out from other designs in the supermarket so that they would be seen.

Anyway we have this brief for Design4Print called What is Good?

Ive decided on a more personal basis something that I think is Good, Hot Chilli Sauce. I want to Promote, Persuade and Inform on why this is good. At the moment Im at the stage of research I have few ideas but havent got round to putting them on paper yet which is bad I know but I will do. I will be producing Posters, recipe cards and labels for the making of my own chilli sauce if all goes to plan I will be making my own sauce....

Ill be looking at other print based work such as adverts and label design I also want to look at Duotone work as I will be only using 2 colours for my final deliverables.

Come to think of it when I was looking for adverts to promote chilli sauce the other day I came across this adverts website that shows some quirky advertisements here are some that I looked at for this Good brief:

Dont Panic - Machine Poster....DESIGN IS ABOUT DOING!

Out with the Old in with the New....

This was for a competition for DontPanic the statement for the poster was Machine, you could respond to it anyway you liked in any shape or form, I chose the telephone comparing the difference between old and new machinery using and old classic phone and the modern Iphone.
Like we did in Visual Language in the first year I used the technique of merging the two images to show a clear comparison of the two.

Experimenting with Colour Processes

With my final image that I chose I experimented with the different colour processes

CMYK

RGB

Duo tone

Monochrome

Grey scale

Spot colour

Here are a few examples that I was testing to see what works and what doesn't.

This is the Duotone process which is an image made up of two colours.

The first two images that I did was that I put a colour gradient behind the image of Blue and Orange. I don't think these colours really complimented it that well because it was only a test to see if I could do it so I picked two colours at random.

So I tried a different way of doing it for the third image and thought about the colours that I wanted to use.

I converted my image to Greyscale, then went to Image, Mode, Duotone and chose two colours which were Black and Pantone 2915C. This worked out better but still made my image looked dark.

Here are some other duotone experiments that I did using the same process. The photo at the bottom of the three is set in triotone. I think they all work really well and the colours that I have chosen for each image contrast well with each other.

The other process that I tried was Monochrome but then overlaying another image in full colour. These are my best images as I felt like I had achieved something as I had never really done anything like this with images before what I like is the contrast between the colour and monochrome. The images looked more interesting to look at as they had more detail to them. I also played around with the effects to change the images to multiple and also brightness levels.

Here are some more Monochrome images using one colour. I minipulated the settings of brightness levels to make the colour not so flat.

The next process that I looked at was Grey scale where again I manipulated with the lighting effects and inverting the colours on some of the images making them look darker in places also cropping the image so the view point is different to experiment with quality of the photo looks best.

Here are some more greyscale images using Invert and shadow.

My next process that I experimented with was Spot colour. Ive never used spot colour before I was quite pleased with what I produced first time around as this was the effect I was aiming for.

To do this I used the magic wand tool to select what I wanted to make one colour, copied and pasted this which made it into another layer. Turned off the background layer and then selected the part of what I was making the spot colour again and chose a colour, then I turned the background layer back on and using the effects menu chose colour which converted the colour into a colour that merged with the background not so bold.

Today I was just browsing the Internet trying to find things to put on to my blog when I came across an artist Jessica Tresser on ilovetypography.com it then led onto a blog called for the love of type which is a really interesting blog containing artists work that they have done using typography, not all of them have been made by Jessica other artists to which haven't been mentioned on the site.

This was an installation created by Jessica, hand cut helvetica letters. I thought it was an interesting and different way to use type.

This is a window art I found again on for the love of type still no artist was mentioned but I like the layout of the type how its jumbled together making it really colourful and bright and making it stand out.

These posters were for the Write Here, Right Now Campaign which I'm not to sure what its for all I know is the name of it. They were placed in bus stops which were later converted to temporary writing spaces including whiteboards and magnetic writing walls. A permanent black marker was used to write on the skin, the font is of different pen weights and is easy to read, different typefaces have been used which I like to show a difference instead of all the same font.

This reminded very much of when I was writing with ink on skin in the First Year that is also another reason why I chose it.

The Punting Tour in Cambridge.

From the work I produced over the Summer this was the image that was chosen within our group because of its composition and angle of photograph. The photo was originally in full colour but I changed it to black and white to fit with the two colours that I chose over the summer to work with.

In my opinion I prefer the photo in full colour because you can see it in more detail and it becomes clearer to see what is actually going on and what it is trying to show.

We were then told to come up with a statement that is personal and can tell the viewer how this relates to your summer.

I chose My day of Punting in Cambridge as its personal to me and states the obvious of what I'm trying to show.

The next day we had to pick six images that were relative to the My Punting image and display them in a way that was appropriate with the statement.

I chose five images to go with the punting photo I already had, the five images were all of different angles of the punting tour.

To display this appropriately I put my photos all in a line full colour this was because over the summer my work was documented as a timeline and the punting tour is also called the punting line so I thought this suited quite well.

When printed it, it didn't look how I thought it would look so I experimented by drawing the simplicity in the photograph using two colours red and black so I was changing my colours also because I didn't think a black line would show much. This looked really good I thought because there was a continuous line showing throughout.

At this moment in time I've decided to stick with the photograph in full colour so it is easier for me to change with the colour process.

Colour Systems for the Print Process

Digital Colour Theory - Subtractive and Addictive

Subtractive is an overlay of colours to create less light which is reflected. The colours become darker until you end up with black.

Subtractive is also another example of when you mix paint together, print a picture, or highlight a word on a page.

Addictive is the reverse of Subtractive, the more colours you add the lighter it becomes this occurs with televisions, and P.C monitors.

Colour Process

CMYK - Is a four colour process (cyan,magneta,yellow, and key black) CMYK is used in the most common printing processes called litho or offset litho.

RGB - (red, green, and blue) this process is screen based.

Greyscale - (Black and white continuous tone, any shade of grey such as a black
and white photograph.)

Spotcolour - this process is where one percific mixed ink is used to pick out a colour on the page seperate to the rest of the picture.

Duotone - this is where two colours are to make up the colour in the image.

Monochrome - this is printing in one colour for the whole image plus the material the image is printed on.

What is Print?

What is Print? - Its not what you think it is theres alot more to it, alot more technical bits and bobs!

Rotary Printing which is automated where the image printing plates are around a cylinder this can be either sheet fed or on a roll.

The three main types of Rotary Printing are: Offset Lithography, Rotogravue, and Flexography.

Ofset Litho - Have etched aluminium plates around the cylinder ink is then transfered to an 'offset' rubber blanket roller then to a print surface. There needs to be a correct balance of ink and water to make it work.

Rotogravue - Has copper plates with mirror image the ink gets transferred directly to the print surface this method is usually on rolls, the advantage of this method is that the plates are more durable and are good for long print runs. Flexography - Has a mirror image rubber polymer plate, transfers 'sticky' ink to a print surface for example carrier bags, crisp packets, sweet wrappers etc.

There are other printing methods such as Digital Printing where it is translated through a digital code to a physical surface also Screen Printing a technique which is using a woven mesh to support an ink blocking stencil. Pad Printing which is a process that can only transfer a 2-D image onto a 3D object

This was the poster I created to promote the release date of it, because my book consists of photos of household textures I used silhouettes of household objects to create a typeface, I tried out a few possibilities by changing the colour, outline and format but this was my final design for the poster.

This was the book I created for the 100 brief, I collected over 100 textures separating them into 6 categories the kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, lounge, studio, and garden. I made the book into a colour swatch book also categorising the photos in colour, I wasn't a fan of this brief as such because one I didn't really enjoy it only at the start of the brief was when I really got into and thought I was going somewhere with it, it was the creation of the book that got me I enjoyed creating the concept but I think I only cracked it at the end of the deadline. From the other mock ups I created I feel happy about the final outcome and works quit well.

Manage Your Time - Speaking from Experience

Here I worked in colaberation with Paul where we worked really well as a team. We had to create something for the up coming first years who are doing Graphic Design. Me and Paul both thought that coming from a foundation or a level or a gap year they would find it hard with managing their time as its probably completely different to what they are used to, well that's what happened to me anyway! We based it on our own experiences showing the poor time management at the start of the course and then it getting better by the end.

We created a diary showing our poor time management then they will flip the diary over to reveal a blank diary which will be theirs to fill it on the first day that they start there is a note saying - Now its your turn don't follow my mistakes manage your time!

This would then give them the opportunity to mange their time correctly with the use of a diary and wall calender. In their diary there is also tips on better time management which I think will push them to be better at keeping time.

Mail Shot - Impersonator

This was the mail shot brief where we got given a profession for a week my profession was an Impersonator. I created a flyer promoting impersonators which you hire for events, business card and an envelope.
I based this brief on type which is something that I feel that I am quite confident with. My envelope was made out of mirror card acting as a mirror to relate to the profession Impersonator as seeing someone else when they look into the mirror.

The two photos shown above are the work of Tseng yu-chin who created video clips of milk throwing in childrens faces, this is one of the artists I used for my elective as it is in relation to my reaction photography, I wanted to something similar but with water but I didnt think anyone would let me do this and take a photo.

The image shown above is by Jeff Wall where he shows the spillage of a carton of milk.

These were the final photos for my Elective showing a reaction to the bursting of a balloon, To capture the reaction at the right moment I used a high shutter speed, To create the right lighting that I wanted I bleached the background with very bright lighting to create a bright white background which then you can focus on the portraiture.

This an advertisement for an air freshener. I like how the text is shown to remove the smells in the room and the use of different type for each category of smell. The white type stands out from the white image which I really like and how the type flows crossing over each other.

This is a promotional piece to promote a record company, I like how the text circles to create a white circle in the middle I think this is to create the shape of a record. There is a range of type tha has been used which is a little confusing to read, I also think colour could be used but still keeping the colour palette limited.

For the Calender brief I had the year 1937 where it was the year of entertainment the most interesting part of the year for me was the launch of the first premiere of Snow white and the Seven Dwarfs. I created my calender on this drawing the images and scanning these into Illustrator live tracing and filling the colour because it was the first colour film to come out in 1937 I made the calender in full colour.

This is also one that I really liked because of its layout and bold typeface. The layout works really well as it is set out down the whole page making it unstoppable to read so you cant get away from it. Red Alert - Design Communications

This was part of the design communications brief where we were partnered up.
My partner was Olivia, we chose to promote the colour Red. We created the colour as a warning sign for safe sex, date rape drug, and don't drink and drive. Our audience we chose to aim to is 18 and over students situated our final resolutions in nightclubs.
We created posters, flyer's, wristbands and stickers. Firstly we created a logo and based our work around the logo we chose a light bulb logo as it is in relation to the tag line 'Red Alert' as the light bulb is something that bright and eye-catching.
Our final resolutions I think work really well and are quality pieces. There very bold and bright and would be noticeable out in the public which is what we were aiming for.

This is a piece that I have done outside of the course. I designed a Poster and flyer for the St.Ives Town Initive informing the public about a Midsummer Barbeque that is happening later next month.

I chose the colour orange as it is a warm summer colour, also set some of the words to an opacity level of 61. For the background I didnt want it to be white because I wanted the type to stand out from the paper so I copied and pasted the information made it smaller and set the opacity even lower to 15 and set this behind the main information.

For the logo, I took it from the St.Ives Town website.

Very random conversation I know ha! We were bored on the way home on the train so thats how it came about I don't generally talk about topics like this in my free time!
From the Conversation brief I was set to make a time line using my information. For this I used image and type making them both relative to the conversation I had.
As you can see the text is made up of all different sizes and weights this is to show the growth of the fetus inside the womb, and also the image is a fetus growing inside the womb which is also referring to the conversation again.
The layout of the text is also something I like as it flows around the fetus created the flow of the sperm.

This was done using Photoshop, creating ten images to show what we have learnt since being in Leeds. I had never used Photoshop as much before but after the Photoshop session I was feeling a little bit better about it but still unsure and wanted my images to look good. We were told when using Photoshop it was strictly image only with descret text if it was have to be used.
This photo says that I use a lot of electricity.
Again I used a photograph from my elective, taking this picture I used a low shutter speed to capture the trail of lights.

This was another photo that I took in my elective when first experimenting with the cameras. Because of the angle of the photo, I worked with the angle of the lighting and situated the light at the bottom of the photo where my shoe is.

Its a photograph that I took when I went to Paris where I found the buildings there very interesting, for this image I changed the Hue/Saturation, and Brighteness/Contrast to make the photo have more of a glowing light and warm feeling.

This image says that my flats kitchen is always messy. For this I took a photo in black and white and depicted colours on the kitchen wall to show a contrast using the magnetic lasso tool and the paint bucket, I was trying to get the feel of clean to unclean using black and white and colour.

I used neon outlines and set the lighting and brightness to low to make the image quite dark because when the image was lighter it was difficult to see everything.

This image says that I have learnt to make my bed on my own.
I had used neon colours for this as my bedsheets were pretty bright and then drew round a few flowers and set there opacity level to quite low so you could see the contrast between some of them.

This was also for the What is a Line brief for Visual Language and was also a set of 5 or more taken from another original drawing in my book.
With this I took an image out of the Vogue magazine picking kate moss. I then layered invisble and masking tape over sections over the image then with a black biro I drew in the highlighted areas of the image making it stand out more. I then scanned the image in a few times so I could work with it more to create a set of images which are shown in my book.

This is one of many, of my favourites in my Visual Language 'What is a Line' brief.
This is not the orignal drawing the orginal drawing is very similar but not distorted it is a tracing of hair products like spray cans, and bottles using the same colours red and purple to bring the black pen off the paper.
To create a set of images I wanted to create other lines and make the image bigger so I scanned the drawing in and moved the book up and down and across the scanner to create the distorted lines which creates a really nice image and you can still see what it is. This is image is a set of five this is the favourite out of the set.

This was also found in the Handwritten Book the chairs are shown as an object and then another image shows the object in words describing it for example "This sofa is not here because it goes with our house". The typeface used is a calligraphic script.
The adverts where made as a set of four for the Bernhardt Furniture Company the type has been used with a good layout to show a sense of style and class. The designer for this was Jeff Hopfer.

This has been an interest of mine since foundation when I did a brief on Bullying. The designer Stefan Stagmeister advertises one of his lectures by carving onto the skin with a razor blade this is very good example of someone sacrificing his body for typography. This image was found in the Book Handwritten by Steven Heller and Mirko in the section scraped, cut, and gouged.

I found this image on a website when I was searching for typography, it was created for the magazine Computer Arts. I knew before even reading who it was designed for that it was created for the Computer Arts magazine because a lot of there work looks similar in the way it is created for example using Photoshop and the effects and illustrations used. The style of font and colour is what attracted me to this piece.

This art work reminds me very much of Si Scott, I like the colours used for this piece but I think the type is to complicated for itself making it not very legible.
